Yet Another Benefit Of A Laundry Line
For years I have put up a hummingbird feeder. And every year I have maybe one hummingbird. Mostly the wasps help themselves and I just end up wasting copious amounts of sugar. So this year I didn't bother putting one up. I was just outside hanging the Chickies very bright, primarily pink wardrobes out to dry and guess who came for a visit? A big, fat, iridescent green hummingbird. We have dragonflies o'plenty around here, and at first that was I thought he was and I almost swatted at him because he kept hanging around so close to me. I guess he was attracted to all those pink Downy scented clothes. He found some lantana and stayed at the mystery ruellia plant drinking for a while. I don't have a picture because I knew if I moved he would leave. Now i'm off to Home Depot for a hummingbird feeder. And i'll probably never see him again.
I have the same experience. They were disinterested when I had it up, but now, they fly in where it used to be...last year... look around a little and then go to the salvia. Not at all like Carrizo where they swarmed around it like bees and would empty a quart in a day! To quote Erma Bombeck,"The grass is always greener ... over the septic tank".
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen as many this year (but it could be because I haven't worked in the yard as much)
ReplyDeletethey prefer the flowers - so keep those flowers growing The feeders attract them at dusk for the energy required over night.
they like teeny bugs too. I notice them buzzing around our compost
