Squirrel Story

So as I was saying about the argument with the squirrrel...... While I was on my blogging vacation, I discovered that we have a squirrel who has mental issues. I'd been noticing him for a couple of days. He tries his hardest to get into the squirrel-proof bird feeder. No kidding, he worked for at least three days trying to get into that thing. Finally he realized that he can take a running leap, flail himself onto the feeder and a few seeds fall to the ground. At which he scurries down like mad for fear his, I don't know, invisible squirrel friend or something will steal it before he gets to it. And then one day I caught him licking the rim of my potted plants. Kevin thought maybe there was dew on it, but he does it even in the middle of the day. I have inspected the pots to see if there are ants or slug slime on it, but it is completely clean. I tell you, he is crazy. Then, one afternoon around dusk I was out taking some clothes off the line and heard him chattering so intently it can only be described as cussing me out. I finished what I was doing and walked over to his tree to see what was going on. There he was, looking at me from a high branch. I just stared at him as he slowly made his way down towards me. I kid you not, he ended up about an arms length away from me on a very low branch. He clacked his teeth at me and flitted his tail. I told him to stay out of my bird feeder. I pointed to another feeder across the yard and told him that there are peanuts in there just for him. (Now who was the crazy one?) Then, he stood up on his hind legs and griped at me some more. I ran for dear life because I was convinced he was going to jump on me and attack. I haven't seen him as much the past couple of days but this morning he was walking back and forth on that same low branch like some kind of security guard. Maybe he (or she) has babies in the tree? Anyway, it's good entertainment.

  1. I have a deer with the same personality traits. A few evenings ago, she was chomping the blooms off of my lantana. You know, those deer resistant plants. I knocked on the window thinking that would scare her away. She snorted at me. I opened the door, went out on the porch and clapped my hands at her, figuring she would leave for sure. She stepped back a few steps and stomped her foot. Whose yard is it, anyway?

  2. To Squirrel:
I have a person with the same personality traits. A few evenings ago, I was browsing the salad bar. You know... all those tasty treats they set out for us and then get mad when we eat them. She knocked on the window. Thinking she was being friendly, I raised my head and said, "Hey!". Then she opened the door, came out on the porch clapping her hands and babbling as if to say "get out of here". Too wierd! I stepped back a few steps and stomped my foot at her. It seemed to work, as she went back in. I mean...what's up with these people? Whose yard is it, anyway?
